- “I don’t have time right now, I’ll do it tomorrow…”
- “I don’t have the money right now…”
- “I don’t have every detail planned out yet…”
- “I’ll start after I watch this Youtube video... (1 hour later)...ok just one more video”
Recognize any of these? They’re called excuses. Excuses that are keeping you stuck, unproductive, and preventing you from achieving greater results in your life.
Do you want to keep panicking and rushing to get something done when it’s almost too late?
Or do you want to take control of your life and do the best work you possibly can?
So if you’re ready to quit this habit that’s eating your life away, start by following these 3 easy steps:
Step 1: It’s Now or Never...Literally
Think about it: tomorrow never comes, because once it’s “tomorrow” it will actually be “today”. So literally, tomorrow never comes because all we have is today.
So by waiting until tomorrow you might as well say you’ll never do it.
With nobody else holding you accountable it gets WAY too easy to hold things off until tomorrow, as if we had an infinite number of them. But we don't. That’s the harsh reality.
Yesterday is gone forever and tomorrow will never come, ALL YOU EVER HAVE IS RIGHT NOW!
So the first step to stopping procrastination is to always keep this in mind:
At each moment you’re standing at a crossroads:
One road leads to achieving your goals and happiness in life
The other road leads to frustration and regret because you waited until “later”
Which path will you follow?
Step 2: Why Am I Doing This? What Will I Get Out of It?
Give yourself a good enough reason to start, and you will. The question now is: what’s your reason? Why do you need to get this done?
Your most powerful motivation has to come from the inside. So if its your dream project you're holding off, then ask yourself…
- What made me want to pursue this in the first place?
- What do I want to create in the world?
- What do I want to prove to myself and to the world by achieving this?
If it’s a school assignment or a work related task that you’re not very enthusiastic about, connect it to something that WILL motivate you. For example:
- I really want to finish this so I can finally watch that movie!
- I need to do this so I can go out tonight!
- I really want to achieve this so [you will in the blank]
Big or small think of every positive aspect that will come out of you finishing what you’ve been holding off.
What’s the best-case scenario if everything turns out great? Now imagine that scenario in your mind like a movie - feel what you would feel like after you accomplished your goal and are reaping the benefits.
Step 3: Take The First Step
You’ve heard it before...a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
What’s the first thing you need to do in order to move forward with your task?
What’s the one thing you’ve wanted to do for a while but it was never the “right time”? What can you do right now to start making it happen?
These next few tips will help you get started:
The Countdown Starter: When the timer runs out, you have to start your task right away
Whenever you find yourself stalling on a task and you’re holding it off for “later”, make that “later” an actual time.
Run a countdown timer on your phone and when it hits zero you HAVE to get started. This same little trick can be used for when you’re lagging on making a decision as well.
P.S. Don’t try to cheat by making it a long time, set the timer for no longer than 5 minutes.
Focus Timer: You MUST focus until the timer runs out
Set your countdown timer for the X amount of minutes that you MUST strictly focus on one task.
No responding to texts, no checking Facebook notifications, no Snapchats, JUST FOCUS!
Yeah, it might be hard to focus for a long time at first, so you can start off with a short amount and gradually work your way up.
You’ll probably even find yourself going over time as you get more and more absorbed in your task.
Break It Down Into Chunks
One of the main reasons we procrastinate is because our work seems so overwhelming that we don’t even know where to start. So we don’t…
Break your work down into small do-able chunks until you’re thinking “Wow, this is so simple I might as well just do it right now!”. Before you know it, your seemingly overwhelming task will be finished and you’re on to the next one.
Be In A Productive Environment
Look at your work desk and your room. Do they make you want to fall asleep, are they so messy that it just stresses you out?
Your working environment has a HUGE impact on how productive you are.
Organize your desk so it actually has space to work on, or maybe go to the library where there are plenty of other people working too.
If you want to get inspired, try going to a place with a nice view.
